Treatment for Varicose Veins in Legs

Vein problems are not life threatening like artery problems that are associated with cardiovascular diseases, like stroke and heart attack. However, they can cause your legs to feel achy and tired at the end of the day, and cause you to shy away from revealing your legs.

Fortunately, varicose veins are treatable through self-care, endovenous ablation or similar minimally invasive treatments, or surgery. Treatment procedures are aimed at closing the problem veins, such that blood reroutes through other veins in that area. Self-care practices, on the other hand, seek to reduce the symptoms.

Evaluating the Vein Problem

During the consultation, your physician will collect information about the problem and rule out any serious concerns with the deep vein system. You can expect:

  • Questions about your medical history, such as the symptoms and duration of the problem, history of abnormal veins in your family, previous treatments, your job and activities, current and previous pregnancies, and any medications you are taking
  • A physical examination of your legs. The physician may photograph the abnormal veins in order to map their size and locations. The doctor may also use a hand-held Doppler scanner to check for signs of reflux in the area
  • A duplex ultrasound may be necessary to provide detailed information about the venous system in order to identify the leak points where the problem originates.

Your Personalized Varicose Veins Treatment Plan for Legs

After the evaluation, you will work with your physician to identify the ideal treatment plan for your unique needs. Several options may be available to you, including:

  • Sclerotherapy – uses a liquid chemical to treat a varicose vein
  • Laser surgery – application of light energy from a laser onto the small red-bluish veins to make them fade away
  • Endovenous Thermal Ablation therapy – use of radiofreqency waves or lasers to produce heat to close off problem veins
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy – small incisions are made in the skin to remove varicose veins

In severe cases, your doctor may recommend either endoscopic vein surgery or vein stripping and ligation, which both involve cuts and attempts to close the varicose vein.
