Varicose Veins Vein Stripping

Vein stripping and ligation is one of the techniques recommended for the treatment of severe cases of varicose veins. It is a surgical procedure where the doctor generally attempts to remove the great or small saphenous varicose veins through small incisions in your skin.

The Procedure

  • First, the doctor will give you a local or general anesthesia to put you to sleep. This ensures that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
  • During surgery, two cuts are made at the top and bottom of the problematic vein to be removed. The first incision is made at the top of the vein. The second, smaller cut is made down the leg, around the knee.
  • The saphenous vein is ligated – tied off – at the top (near your groin) and sealed so it stops transmitting blood.
  • The surgeon then strips – removes – the vein via lower cut. To do this, a thin, flexible wire is carefully inserted through the bottom of the vein and then pulled out. Blood continues to flow via the deeper veins.
  • After the procedure, your legs are wrapped in compression bandages to manage the swelling and bleeding.
  • You should be able to return to your normal routine in one week post-surgery

Recovery from Vein Stripping

You will need between 1 and 4 weeks to fully recover. For proper recovery, ensure that:

  • You take your pain medications as prescribed
  • Wear bandages or compression stockings as directed
  • Walk frequently – even short walks – beginning on the day of surgery
  • Keep your legs elevated when lying down and sitting
  • Avoid strenuous exercises, including lifting and standing for long periods for the first 7 – 14 days
  • Avoid air travel for the first couple of weeks
  • Avoid hot environments, including saunas, hot baths, and whirlpools as they increase the likelihood of varicose veins reappearing

Lastly, call your doctor if you experience severe swelling or bleeding, numb feet, increasing leg pain, chest pain, fever, or shortness of breath.
