What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are essentially swollen & twisted veins that may be seen in the form of bulging, bluish cords running just beneath the surface of the skin. They are commonly found on your legs and feet, though may be prevalent in other areas as well, including the face and chest.

Varicose veins are a relatively common condition, and for many people they are genetic in origin. Varicose veins are more common in females, although males are also prone to develop them. In the U.S. alone, they affect about 23% of all Americans.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins may sometimes cause minor painful, though are mainly harmless and do not possess any symptoms, unless they are left untreated.

Complications of Varicose Veins if Not Treated

Without treatment, varicose veins generally tend to get worse. Those who do not get them treated are more likely to develop:

  • Superficial thrombophlebitis - the varicose vein is inflamed and tender. A clot is usually present in the vein.
  • Bleeding - even with minor trauma, the varicose vein may be associated with profuse bleeding due to vein being under high pressure
  • Venous eczema - the skin around the vein may become dry and very itchy.
  • Venous pigmentation - this is brown staining of the skin around the ankle. It is due to the leakage of small amount of blood from the veins into the skin.
  • Venous ulceration - ulcers at the ankle
  • Swelling of the feet
  • Occasional blood clots in the veins
  • Infection of the vein

How Center for Vein Wellness Treats Varicose Veins in Los Angeles & Ventura

1. Phlebectomy

Also known as Ambulatory Phlebectomy or microphlebectomy, phlebectomy is a minimally invasive treatment option where Dr. Shah uses a needle or scalpel to make micro-incisions to remove varicose veins from the surface of your leg.

2. Sclerotherapy (ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy)

Dr. Shah may use a non-invasive form of sclerotherapy, known as Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy to treatment small varicose veins.

3. Combination of these procedures

Depending on your case, Dr. Shah may recommend more than one treatment option for optimal results. This is to be discussed during your FREE consultation with our Los Angeles Vein Specialists.
